Mike Watt is a workingman’s musician. Since earning a reputation as one of the world’s most talented and creative bass players as a founding member of seminal California punk band the Minutemen, Watt has stayed busy with an overwhelming amount of projects. Whether playing as a member of legendary Detroit rockers the Stooges or composing his various operas, Watt injects his musical personality into everything he does. Look up Mike Watt on Wikipedia and you’ll find a staggering number of albums, with the likes of Nels Cline and Dave Grohl, and involvement in too many bands to even keep track. Somehow the 56-year-old bass player has managed to maintain this prolific output and keep his music exciting with his trademark style of unpredictable and complex punk-funk playing. Watt’s current project – one of many he has going at any given time – is no exception. Il sogno del marinaio, which means “the sailor’s dream” in Italian, finds him teaming up once again with Andrea Belfi and Stefano Pilia, a drummer and guitarist from Italy he connected with and released an album, La Busta Gialla, in 2009. The chemistry in the trio worked well enough both onstage and in the studio that they decided to team up again for another album, the recently released Canto Secondo, aptly translated to “second song.” Each musician brought their own tracks to the table, giving the album a more authentic sense of collaboration. The album as a whole feels experimental and exploratory, but still flows along with Watt’s “econo” jamming. Canto Secondo can drift into strange territory as the musicians stretch out and search for new possibilities, but for longtime fans of Mike Watt it is yet another interesting project from this titan of bass.

The Striggles haben es sich nie leicht gemacht. In den 17 Jahren ihres Bestehens (ohne Besetzungswechsel), war es für sie ständige Aufgabe neue musikalische Gefilde (für sich) zu entdecken, sich neu zu erfinden und trotzdem die Striggles zu bleiben. Der experimentelle Geist ist ein Hauptteil ihrer Arbeit und auch den Begriff "Experiment" versuchen sie für sich immer wieder neu zu definieren. Die Album-Projekte "Movements" und "Exotic Creatures" sind ihre persönlichsten, sowohl textlich als auch was die musikalische Herangehensweise betrifft. In den Lyrics behandeln die 4 Mitglieder Themen, die sowohl höchst-eigene Lebensereignisse betreffen, als auch die Beobachtung der außergewöhnlichen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre. Song-Texte waren wichtiger Teil der Arbeitsprozesse und Klausuren der Band. Konsequenterweise spiegelt das musikalische Gesicht der Alben auch die Suche nach momentaner Befindlichkeit, Orientierung, Einordnung wider. Das betrifft auch den eigentlichen Produktionsprozess - die Alben wurden live unter der Leitung ihres ständigen Wegbegleiters Bernd Heinrauch eingespielt. Über weite Strecken bewegen sich beide Platten in intensiv ruhigen Gefielden, manchmal Grenzbereiche zwischen Komposition und Improvisation auslotend, vielleicht weniger technisch im Zugang als frühere The Striggles-Werke, aber in ständiger rastloser Suche und Auseinandersetzung. https://striggles.bandcamp.com/

RONIA ist ein One Woman-Projekt. Mit ihrem großen Vorbild, dem als Straßenmusiker bekannt gewordenen Moondog, verbindet die aus Graz stammende Neo-Wienerin der Hang zu Minimalismus und eine eigentümliche Art des Komponierens. So spielt nämlich der Zufall bei ihr eine nicht unwesentliche Rolle, etwa wenn in ihrem 7m² kleinen Zimmer, in dem sie ihre Musik selbst aufnimmt, etwas unabsichtlich aufs Klavier fällt und so eine neue Melodie anstößt. Dabei entstehen oft minimalistische Klangfiguren aus aufs Notwendigste heruntergebrochenen Klavierthemen, mit Bedacht eingesetzten Snythesizerflächen und Akzenten durch Tuba, Trompete oder Streicher.
