Equal parts primitive brutality and mind-bending psychedelia, Kurokuma bring a freshness to the sludge sound with their percussive focus and mantra-like songwriting.
The band formed its first official lineup in 2014, with guitarist/vocalist Jacob Mazlum, drummer Joe Allen and bassist George Ionita. The trio spent a year crafting their nascent sound before releasing a self-titled demo in the autumn of that year. This quickly garnered attention and earned them support slots with the likes of
Conan, Samothrace and Skeletonwitch. The band welcomed in fresh blood when Zakk Wells joined as their new bassist in 2022; his second show
was a baptism of fire at Doomcember festival in Iceland.
With album number two being recorded in May 2023, and European and Scandinavian tours to follow, including appearances at Desertfest, Brutal Assault and Damnation, 2023 could be their biggest year yet.
