Jahrhundert auf einmal zur politischen Forderung: Die rechtskonservativen Parteien setzen auf nationalistische Töne und kommen damit gleich zweimal in Regierungsverantwortung. Während Abschottung und Anti-Ausländer-Rhetorik zur Jahrtausendwende noch Befremden auslösen, hat das Beispiel mittlerweile in weiten Teilen Europas Schule gemacht. (And Suddenly Hatred Erupts)

Whereas Austria still sported the nickname “Island of the Blessed” in the 1970s, the dream of becoming an island has suddenly become a political demand in the twenty-first century: Right-wing parties put all their eggs in one nationalistic basket and have twice been elected into office on the federal level. While building walls and xenophobic rhetoric were still frowned-upon at the turn of the millennium, these strategies have become part of the playbook for many European politicians. This program serves as a cautionary tale against scapegoat politics on the edge of populism and paranoia. (de)
