New Balkan Shorts Stadtkino Wien, 30 May 15

Wir reden vom Balkan, also natürlich auch von der Vergangenheit. Die Gesellschaften und Kulturen der ex-jugoslawischen Länder scheinen oft hoffnungslos in der Geschichte versunken zu sein. Einige Filme dieses Programms zeigen das sehr offensichtlich, andere subtil, aber dennoch unmissverständlich. Manche Filme wiederum wirken so modern und zukunftsgerichtet, dass ihre Herkunft gar nicht so leicht erkennbar ist. Dass dieses Programm repräsentativ für das Kino des Balkans steht, wäre eine prätentiöse Übertreibung. Die Idee war vielmehr, ein Gefühl für den Balkan und sein Kino zu vermitteln - als das Produkt einer Gesellschaft, die für die einen Filme als spezifisches Setting dient und mit deren traditionellen Normen in anderen Filmen eindrucksvoll gebrochen wird. Das Programm ist weder dezidiert politisch noch historisch, wird aber - wie alle Kulturprodukte des Balkans - unausweichlich so interpretiert werden. Mal sehen, was diese sieben Filme mit Euch machen.

It's the Balkans, so of course it has something to do with the past. The societies of countries of former Yugoslavia and their cultures often seem hopelessly drowned in history. Some of the films in this programme point at it very obviously, while in others this influence is implied, but hard to miss. Then again, you will see films so rooted in the modern world and oriented at the future, that they could be coming from anywhere in Europe. To say that this selection is fully representative of the Balkan cinema, would be a pretentious exaggeration. The idea is rather for the programme as a whole to give you a feeling of the Balkans and its cinema as a product of society - either as a specific setting for some of the films, or, in others, as a denial of the traditional norms it imposes. This is not a political or historical programme, but cultural products from the Balkans are inevitably interpreted as both. Let's see what you get out of these seven little pieces.
