Fine Film: Painting on moving Canvas Metro Kinokulturhaus, 27 May 15

In den 1910er Jahren versuchten kubistische und futuristische Maler Bewegung nachzubilden, indem sie mehrere Perspektiven auf einer Leinwand vereinten. Es war ein natürlicher Schritt für die Avantgarde, so das neue Medium Kino unter die Lupe zu nehmen. In den frühen 20er Jahren formulierten Künstler wie Hans Richter, Man Ray oder Fernand Léger dann die Richtlinien dessen, was später als Cinéma Pur oder Absoluter Film - mit Fokus auf Bewegung, Form und Rhythmus - bekannt wurde.

Nachdem der Zweite Weltkrieg diese Experimente im Keim erstickte (Pioniergroßtaten von Len Lye, Oskar Fischinger oder Mary Ellen Bute bildeten die Ausnahme), flackerte die Abstraktion in Kunst und Kino in den 60er Jahren wieder auf. Experimentalisten und Op Artists erlebten ihre Blüte, bald öffneten leichter zugängliche Film- und Videoeffekte zahllose Türen. Und noch heute erweitern KünstlerInnen die Möglichkeiten des Absoluten Films - sei es mit traditionellen Mitteln oder neuen Technologien.

In the 1910s, cubist and futurist painters sought to recreate Motion in their works by juxtaposing multiple points of view on a single canvas. It was the natural step for fine artists to probe Cinema as a new medium. In the early 20s, artists like Hans Richter, Man Ray and Fernand Léger formulated the guidelines to what became known as Cinéma Pur or Absolute Film, focusing on Motion, Form and Rhythm.

After the early experiments reached an impasse caused by World War II  (although wonderful works continued to be created by pioneers like Len Lye, Oskar Fischinger or Mary Ellen Bute), it was only in the 60s when abstraction rekindled the flame in fine arts and cinema. Experimentalists and Op Artists created never before imagined colours and textures, and accessible film and video effects opened countless doors. Today, many fine artists continue to broaden the possibilities of Absolute Film, either working with traditional means or researching new technologies.
