Christian Holden (US, The Hotelier solo)
Christian Holden writes songs that are at once fragile and devastating. Over the past eight years he has helped inject a rare strain of naive, unabashedly sincere poetry into contemporary rock music as singer, lyricist, and bassist for The Hotelier. Following last year's marathon tour supporting the band's third studio album "Goodness", Holden is re-interpreting the band's material and exploring new work in the form of acoustic solo performances that strip away the layered warmth of a full band, revealing the raw bones and stretched sinew of his songs.
Emperor X (US, Tiny Engines)
Chad Matheny has been making music under the Emperor X moniker since 1998. His recordings and live shows fuse the folk/punk songwriter tradition with tape loop minimalism, and reveal incurable obsessions with transportation infrastructure, modernist literature, and lo-fi Chicago house tracks. Consequences of Sound called his work "a radical, challenging, and sometimes baffling discography." Matheny has performed several hundred wildly-varied concerts, from an ambient noise set at a symphony hall in Porto to an acoustic sing-along in the basement of a garden supply shop in Pittsburgh.
