Zoetrope - Die filmische Illusion (The cinematic illusion)

Film ist Bewegung. Oder zumindest die Illusion von Bewegung. Das lässt sich anhand des Zoetrops, des Vorläufers der Kinematographie, schön überprüfen. Ein Blick durch die Schlitze der sich mechanisch drehenden "Wundertrommel" – und schon scheinen sich die statischen Bilder oder Objekte im Inneren zu bewegen. Dieses filmhistorische Motiv diente als Inspiration für das vorliegende Programm, dessen Arbeiten vor allem eines gemeinsam haben: die (beinahe) durchgängige Kreisbewegung. Was letztendlich für die Bewegung sorgt, spielt in diesem Fall keine Rolle: Es können eine Windmühle, ein Roller oder ein Dolly sein, an denen die Kamera befestigt ist. Es können aber auch ein Motorrad, ein Karussell oder ein Plattenspieler sein, die sich vor der Kamera bewegen. Oder eben völlig unbewegte Elemente, die mittels Animation in Bewegung versetzt werden - ähnlich dem Zoetrop. Mit einem ebensolchen in Lebensgröße entlassen wir euch wieder aus dem drehenden Liegekino.

Film is movement. Or at least the illusion of movement. This is easily verified with the aid of a zoetrope, cinematography’s predecessor. One look through the slits of this mechanically revolving “wonder drum” – and there you have it: the static images or objects inside seem to be moving. This motif from film history was the inspiration behind this programme, whose films have one thing in common: (almost) continuous gyration. What makes the movement in the end is not significant in this case: the camera can be mounted on a wind mill, a scooter or a dolly. It could also be a motor bike, a carousel or a record player moving in front of the camera. Or totally static elements that are set into motion through animation – similar to a zoetrope. A life-size zoetrope will be the final trick up the sleeve of this gyrating airbed movies programme.
