Encounters Bristol

Being asked to create a programme on radical film immediately resonated with Encounters and our home, Bristol, where activism, street art and counterculture are defining elements of the city’s identity. In Stokes Croft, Bristol’s vibrant cultural quarter, Banksy’s iconic Mild Mild West mural represents a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail to three riot policemen. Exploring the idea of fighting against an enemy across different places and times has progressively become our pathway to this programme. From local to global, past and present struggles resonate and reveal aspects of each other. Dealing with political action, acts of resistance and the grating contradictions lying at the heart of any conflict, these films challenge the viewer with the aesthetic flair and structural anarchy inherent in short filmmaking, which we, as a festival, unconditionally celebrate.

Die Anfrage ein Programm zu radikalem Film zu kuratieren, ist beim Encounters und in unserer Heimat Bristol, in der Aktivismus, Street Art und Gegenkultur wichtige Elemente der Identität der Stadt sind, sofort auf großen Widerhall gestoßen. In Stokes Croft, dem lebhaftesten kulturellen Viertel Bristols, zeigt Banksys ikonisches Wandbild Mild Mild West einen Teddybär, der einen Molotov-Cocktail in Richtung dreier Polizisten wirft. Die Erforschung der Idee eines Kampfes gegen einen Feind an verschiedenen Orten und zu verschiedenen Zeiten wurde bald zum zentralen Motiv des Programms. Lokale und globale, vergangene und gegenwärtige Kämpfe schwingen mit und enthüllen Aspekte voneinander. Im Umgang mit politischer Aktion, mit dem Akt des Widerstands und den knirschenden Widersprüchen, die jedem Konflikt zugrunde liegen, fordern diese Filme das Publikum mit ihr eigenen Ästhetik und der strukturellen Anarchie, die dem Kurzfilm innewohnt, heraus. Genau diese Filme feiern wir als Festival bedingungslos.
