Nach ihrem Einstieg in die unabhängige Filmszene der Bay Area als Co-Gründerin von Canyon Cinema in den frühen 1960er-Jahren zog Chick Strand nach Los Angeles, um das ethnografische Filmprogramm an der UCLA zu besuchen. Als Mittdreißigerin (und alleinerziehende Mutter) begann sie hier mit ihrem außergewöhnlichen Schaffen: von Experimenten der Bildmanipulation und berauschender Psychedelik über komplexe Collagen bis zu bahnbrechenden poetisch-ethnografischen Filmen. Dieses Programm ist ein Anfang, um Strands Brillanz als Filmemacherin und audiovisueller Denkerin zur Geltung zu bringen. (mt)

Following her initial entry into independent film culture as co-creator of Canyon Cinema in the early 1960s, Chick Strand relocated to Los Angeles as a single mother of two in her mid-thirties to attend the ethnographic film program at UCLA. An extraordinary body of work unfolded, from her early experiments with image manipulation and a celebratory psychedelia, to her complex collage pieces, to her rule-breaking poetic ethnographic films. It’s impossible to express the full breadth of Strand’s brilliance as a filmmaker and audiovisual thinker in a single program, but it’s a start. (mt)
